DEMOCRACY

/ wip /

LOGLINE

Róbert Mravik’s life turns upside down when one of his examinee, the political activist Júlia Polgár refuses to pay him the usual bribery money for getting the driving licence.

CONCEPT

The film is set in a society beset by corruption. Gratuity payments to doctors and bribing one’s way to a driving license are considered normal. Róbert Mravik (50), a driving examiner, has learned to live with the system. He does not moralise, he just tries to make the most of it. He does quite well for himself until he meets Júlia Polgár, a political activist who refuses to bribe him. This unusual act, flying in the face of everything this world is built on, will turn Róbert’s life and the country itself upside down. By the end of the story, Róbert grasps something of social responsibility and begins to care for things other than his own prosperity.

Democracy Work In Progress is a black comedy,  with ludicrously absurd situations. In some, the viewers will recognise and laugh at their own pettiness.  Scenes are exaggerated and over the top the way they are in Fargo; social problems are interwoven with everyday life similarly to Almodóvar’s Wild Tales.

The story is a thrilling and sarcastic tale of a valueless society, with many twists and turns. A man  with no particularly strong morality meets a textbook dogmatic in a tense situation which is also a hotbed of humour.
